If you’re moving to Austin, then know you’re moving to one of the best cities in Texas! Of course, moving to Austin comes with its own set of challenges – such as finding family neighborhoods in Austin.

This is a challenge faced even by those just moving to a new neighborhood in the same city.

There’s a lot you need to take into consideration either way, such as how safe the neighborhood is, whether it’s family-friendly, and how conveniently located it is in relation to the better schools.

Plus, you want to know there are options for helping keep your kids healthy and active, right?

To help take some of the weight off your shoulders, we’ve got a quick guide on the 8 best family neighborhoods in Austin.

Let’s get started!

Avery Ranch

Avery Ranch is one of Austin’s most family-friendly neighborhoods.

Located about 20 miles north of downtown Austin, it’s part of a larger planned community area just far enough from the bustling business district to be peaceful.

In fact, there’s plenty to do in the neighborhood, with several community parks nearby. There are also several schools in and around Avery Ranch, including the Abacus School of Austin and Challenger School.

Brentwood

Brentwood is a lot closer to downtown Austin – just 7 miles to the north, in fact. Luckily, this works in Brentwood’s favor by giving it a small-town feel.

There are a wealth of small, local businesses catering to the close-knit community’s needs, as well as picnic areas, athletic fields, and creeks winding between the houses, most of which are built in the classic bungalow style.

Plus, there are some top-quality schools in the area, including Austin Classical School, Lamar Middle School, and the private Paragon Prep School.

Cherrywood

Cherrywood is a mere 3 miles north of downtown Austin, making it one of the great family neighborhoods in Austin for families looking for a wealth of activities.

In fact, it’s almost as if you’re living downtown, while still getting to enjoy the quieter suburban feel fostered by Cherrywood’s numerous parks.

Some of Austin’s best schools in the area include Clearview Sudbury School and Maplewood Elementary School.

Mueller

Mueller is right next to Cherrywood and boasts many of the same conveniences. With the University of Texas a mere 2 miles away, there’s a vibrant feel to the neighborhood.

The community is big on sustainability, so in addition to having just about everything in easy walking distance, you can also visit the Mueller Farmers Market.

In addition to the close-proximity schools shared with Cherrywood, Mueller families can also enroll their kids in Austin Classic Academy, Primrose School of Austin, and The Rise of School of Austin Preschoolers.

Pflugerville

If you’re looking for something a little further from downtown Austin, head to Pflugerville.

Being about 18 miles to the northeast makes this charming community a nature lover’s delight, thanks to the 21 undeveloped parks and greenbelts, as well as the 40+ parks and recreation facilities.

And if you’re looking to take a day trip, state highways 45 and 130 intersect right by Pflugerville (I-35 is also nearby).

Cele Middle School, Pflugerville High School, and Windermere Elementary School are conveniently located for families with kids of all ages.

Round Rock

To the north of Pflugerville (just a hop, skip, and a jump over HWY 45, in fact) is Round Rock.

Known as one of the most liveable, family-friendly neighborhoods in the US, there’s a wealth of outdoor activity to be found here.

Cactus Ranch Elementary, Forest Creek Elementary School, and Success High School are just some of the many great schools in the neighborhood.

Tarrytown

Tarrytown is great for families who love to be in nature without wanting to sacrifice city-living convenience.

Just a few minutes’ drive west of downtown Austin and you can easily take a quick bike ride to Lady Bird Lake. Plus, the airport is a mere half-hour away – perfect for family vacations or picking up visiting relatives!

With the University of Texas only a few minutes away, Tarrytown is also home to some of Austin’s most exemplary schools.

A few examples worth mentioning include Casis Elementary School, Good Shepard Episcopal School, and O Henry Middle School.

Windsor Park

Love the idea of living in Cherrywood or Mueller, but want family neighborhoods in Austin just a little further out of the downtown area?

Windsor Park might be the perfect solution for you!

In fact, Windsor Park is right on the northern border to Mueller, so downtown is just 6 miles away.

This is just one of many reasons a diverse blend of families and young professionals come together in this community-driven neighborhood.

Austin Achieve Public School, Blanton Elementary School, and Harris Elementary School are all within easy walking distance.

Plus, the University of Texas is a mere 15 minutes’ drive, with the University Hill neighborhood serving as Windsor Park’s eastern border.

Something you should probably know about Austin (especially if you’re moving here for the first time) is that it’s a big city.

In fact, it’s one of the fastest growing cities in the US. There are more than 100 neighborhoods in total, divided into a few general regions.

With that in mind, it wasn’t exactly a walk in the park trying to narrow it down to just 8 neighborhoods.

Still, we believe we’ve earmarked the best family neighborhoods in Austin to help you find the right place for you to raise your family!
